Raksha Rajya Mantri Reviews Border Area Development Programme with Parliamentary Committee
Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Ajay Bhatt recently presided over a significant Consultative Committee Meeting of Parliament concerning the Border Area Development Programme (BADP). Held in New Delhi on August 19, 2026, the meeting brought together Members of Parliament from various states to deliberate on the progress and strategic implications of the BADP. This crucial government initiative is designed to address the unique development requirements of residents in remote and often inaccessible regions along India's international borders. Its primary objectives include enhancing the living standards of these populations and fostering a greater sense of security and belonging.
During the discussions, Shri Bhatt underscored the imperative of bolstering border infrastructure and improving the overall welfare of those residing in border areas, highlighting their direct contribution to national security. The programme currently extends its reach across 111 border districts spread across 16 states and two Union Territories. Participants engaged in comprehensive dialogues covering the geopolitical significance of border regions, the specific hardships faced by their inhabitants, and the effectiveness of the BADP's ongoing implementation. The valuable insights and suggestions provided by the MPs are expected to contribute to refining and strengthening the programme further. The Minister reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring the comprehensive development and well-being of communities living along India's sensitive international frontiers.
It is important to note that the BADP is currently in its sunset phase, with funds primarily allocated for committed liabilities. The government has also approved the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) in two phases (VVP-I in February 2023 and VVP-II in April 2025) for comprehensive development of select border villages, indicating a strategic transition in border area development policy. This ongoing emphasis on border development aligns with the broader government focus on enhancing defence preparedness and connectivity in border regions.
