Russia and North Korea Inaugurate First-Ever Cross-Border Road Bridge Across Tumen River
Russia and North Korea have officially opened their first direct road link, inaugurating a 1-kilometer automobile bridge spanning the Tumen River along their shared border. The two-lane structure, named after Soviet military officer Yakov Novichenko, was inaugurated in a joint virtual ceremony attended by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song. The opening event featured a ceremonial convoy of heavy trucks bearing flags from both countries crossing the new border corridor.
Prior to this development, cross-border transport between the two countries was limited to direct air travel and a single railway bridge constructed in 1959, known as the Friendship Bridge, where road vehicles could only cross by placing temporary wooden planks on the rail tracks. Construction on the dedicated road bridge began in April 2025 following diplomatic agreements between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to enhance strategic infrastructure.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Mishustin described the opening as a historic milestone that highlights the unprecedented level of political and economic cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. The new road link is expected to streamline commercial transport, facilitate freight logistics, and strengthen economic integration across the border amid broader geopolitical realignments.
