Uber and Wayve Launch United Kingdom's First Commercial Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service in London
In a major milestone for European commercial autonomous driving, ride-hailing company Uber and United Kingdom-based artificial intelligence startup Wayve launched supervised autonomous rides in London on September 3, 2026. This marks the first time that autonomous ride-hailing services have been made commercially available to the general public in the United Kingdom.
Under the partnership, London passengers requesting UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort trips through the standard Uber app may be matched with a Wayve self-driving vehicle at no additional cost. The initial fleet consists of fully electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles fitted with the Wayve AI Driver system and advanced spatial sensors. In compliance with Transport for London regulations, the vehicles currently operate with a licensed safety driver supervising the trip from the front seat to handle potential manual overrides. Passengers receive in-app notifications and interactive touchscreen displays inside the vehicle to track their route and manage ride preferences.
Wayve's technology utilizes end-to-end artificial intelligence models that learn driving behaviors directly from sensor data without relying heavily on pre-mapped high-definition geographic data. Over 140,000 London residents had opted into autonomous trip matching prior to the launch. This rollout places London alongside major cities in the United States and China as a primary market for commercial robotaxi deployments, paving the way for eventual fully driverless operations across Europe once regulatory frameworks evolve.
