UN Envoy Warns Security Council of 'Dangerous Phase' as Conflict Escalates in Yemen
On September 10, 2026, United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg briefed an emergency session of the UN Security Council, warning that four years of relative calm in Yemen have come to an end as hostilities dramatically escalate across multiple front lines. The emergency meeting was convened in response to intensifying fighting and attacks on strategic maritime and energy infrastructure.
Grundberg informed the Council that Houthi forces launched a major military offensive along Yemen's strategic western coast, gaining control of the port city of Mokha, located approximately 75 kilometers from the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The Bab al-Mandeb strait is a crucial chokepoint for international shipping and global energy transport linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The capture of Mokha presents immediate risks to freedom of navigation and threatens to drag the region into a broader conflict with severe global economic repercussions.
The UN envoy urged all conflicting parties to cease hostile military actions both within Yemen and across international borders into Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that military escalation offers no sustainable solution and called for keeping open diplomatic channels to preserve a political settlement pathway. International concern remains high regarding civilian displacement and the disruption of critical maritime supply routes.
