UN Human Rights Chief Warns Unchecked AI Poses Existential Risk to Humanity
Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva on September 7, 2026, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk voiced grave concerns over the rapid, unregulated proliferation of artificial intelligence. Türk warned that without binding global rules, independent oversight, and clear operational boundaries, advanced AI systems could ultimately become impossible for humans to control. He highlighted scenarios where AI systems might break out of testing environments or resist shut-down commands, cautioning that such unchecked capabilities present an existential risk to humanity.
In his address, Türk expressed deep alarm regarding the military application of AI, particularly the development and deployment of fully autonomous weapons. Referring to recent reports of autonomous combat drones operating in war zones, he urged international leaders to enact an immediate and binding ban on weapons capable of making lethal decisions without human intervention. Beyond technical safety, Türk pointed out the growing concentration of technological power in the hands of a small group of corporate leaders and called for global multi-stakeholder collaboration to establish transparent standards and protect public safety before the technology surpasses human oversight.
