Union Home Minister Amit Shah Unveils Three-Year Roadmap to Make India Drug-Free by 2029
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that India's fight against illegal narcotics has entered a structured 'mission mode' for the 2026–2029 period. Speaking after chairing a high-level narcotics coordination meeting in Panaji, Goa, the Home Minister outlined a comprehensive three-year national strategy aimed at achieving a drug-free India by 2029, supporting the broader goal of Viksit Bharat@2047.
The strategic roadmap rests on four key pillars: intelligence and operations-based law enforcement; strict control over precursor chemicals and synthetic drugs; demand reduction and rehabilitation; and multi-agency capacity building. To enforce accountability, the Home Ministry has set over 200 time-bound action points with mandatory quarterly performance reviews across participating ministries and enforcement bodies.
Under this campaign, national security agencies including the Border Security Force, Customs, Indian Coast Guard, and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence will deploy advanced scanner technologies and risk profiling at land borders, seaports, and cargo hubs. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate and Financial Intelligence Unit will prioritize tracing financial networks and seizing assets belonging to drug kingpins, while Interpol and foreign affairs officials focus on extraditing overseas cartel operatives.
