Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Cautions Semiconductor Industry to Guard Against Cyberattacks
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has issued a clear warning to India's burgeoning semiconductor industry and deep-tech startups, cautioning them to prepare for potential cyberattacks and geopolitical disruptions. Speaking in an interview with the Press Trust of India, the minister highlighted that as India rapidly establishes its capability to design and manufacture silicon chips, established international players and foreign entities may view the country's technological rise as a threat to their dominance in the global value chain.
Vaishnaw emphasized that the federal government has candidly advised tech companies, chip fabrication units, and design firms to implement robust cybersecurity protocols and risk mitigation strategies. With five commercial semiconductor manufacturing facilities moving into production and foreign tech majors committing billions in capital under the government's Semicon 2.0 framework, securing the supply chain against digital sabotage and espionage has become a national priority.
The minister expressed confidence that India's youth-led startups will eventually build global semiconductor powerhouses on par with Intel and Qualcomm. However, he stressed that maintaining constant vigilance and building resilient cybersecurity defenses will be essential to protecting India's critical digital infrastructure and sustaining its momentum as a global chip manufacturing hub.
