Union Minister Piyush Goyal Projects $200 Billion Data Centre Investment Opportunity for India
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal chaired a high-level CEO roundtable in New Delhi focused on improving the ease of doing business to scale India's data centre ecosystem. Addressing industry leaders, global hyperscalers, investors, and state government representatives, the minister highlighted that India's rapidly growing digital economy and artificial intelligence ecosystem could attract more than $200 billion in data centre investments.
During the meeting, Goyal described India as the world's best location for setting up data infrastructure due to its immense market demand, strong economic growth of 7.8% in the recent quarter, and expanding tech workforce. Discussions centered on addressing key operational bottlenecks, including single-window clearance mechanisms, ready-to-use land banks, dual power supply connections, and cross-border renewable energy procurement. Several state representatives and industry participants noted that the $200 billion investment projection could prove conservative given the surging demand for cloud computing and AI capabilities.
The government also noted that the newly updated National Building Code 2026 now explicitly recognizes data centres under a distinct category with specific fire-safety and operational benchmarks. The initiative aims to position India as a premier global hub for cloud computing and AI infrastructure, driving long-term economic development toward the vision of a $30 trillion economy by 2047.
