United Kingdom Bans Import of Goods from Illegal Israeli Settlements in Occupied West Bank
In a major foreign policy shift, the United Kingdom has announced a ban on importing goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements located in the occupied West Bank. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband outlined the new measures in Parliament, emphasizing that the move is aimed at protecting the viability of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. In addition to the trade ban, the UK government is introducing new legal powers to sanction individuals, services, and corporate entities that facilitate, support, or profit from illegal settlement activity. The decision comes amid growing international concern over rising settler violence and accelerating settlement expansion in Palestinian territories. The UK government underscored that continued illegal expansion undermines prospects for long-term regional peace, security, and stability. Several other European nations have expressed support for similar economic restrictions to uphold international humanitarian law.
