US Assures India on Technology Access Amidst Focus on Digital Sovereignty and AI Growth
India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S. Krishnan recently confirmed that the United States has provided assurances that once technology access is granted to India, it will not be unilaterally revoked. This commitment comes at a critical juncture as India continues to articulate its stance on emerging technologies, emphasizing the need for innovation over premature regulation. Krishnan reiterated India's position that the technology sector, particularly AI, still requires room for rapid innovation and that comprehensive regulation may not yet be timely. However, he also acknowledged that if the necessity for regulation arises and the time is appropriate, India would not hesitate to act. This dialogue follows growing global discussions around technological sovereignty and supply chain resilience, highlighted by lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. India is actively pursuing a "digital-first" transformation, leveraging technology and AI to enhance public service delivery, improve transparency, and boost industrial growth across various states like Uttar Pradesh. The nation's digital connectivity industry is projected to remain a significant growth engine, driven by aggressive expansion of e-governance, AI infrastructure, and rural broadband networks. However, this rapid growth also brings challenges, including intensifying competition, evolving data localization and privacy regulations, and growing cybersecurity threats. The US assurance is particularly relevant in the context of recent global events, such as the temporary suspension of access to certain advanced AI models, which has spurred debates in India about accelerating indigenous AI infrastructure and reducing reliance on foreign frontier models.
