US Denies Visas to Palestinian President Abbas and Officials for UN General Assembly Session
The United States State Department has denied visas to Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas and senior members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), preventing them from attending the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. While the official US statement did not explicitly name Abbas, it confirmed that visas would be restricted for PLO and PA officials under applicable federal immigration provisions, citing national security and diplomatic policy considerations.
The Palestinian Authority issued a sharp condemnation of the US decision, calling it a violation of the UN Headquarters Agreement, which requires the host country to facilitate diplomatic access for representatives of observer states and member nations. Under the arrangement communicated by Washington, President Abbas will be permitted to deliver his address to the UN General Assembly via pre-recorded video link. The move comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia and has drawn criticism from diplomatic circles for hindering direct high-level multilateral engagement at the UN's premier annual conference.
