US President Signs Law Imposing Broad Sanctions on Russia's Energy Sector and Shadow Fleet
United States President Donald Trump signed legislation enacted by Congress imposing comprehensive new sanctions on Russia to escalate economic pressure over its military operations in Ukraine. The bipartisan package targets key pillars of Moscow’s economy, specifically focusing on its energy export mechanisms and defense production industries.
A primary focus of the new measure is Russia’s "shadow fleet" — a network of untracked maritime oil tankers used to circumvent Western price caps and export restrictions. Additionally, the law grants the American executive broad discretionary authority to levy tariffs of up to 100 percent on international entities and foreign nations purchasing Russian oil and natural gas, potentially impacting major global importers including China and India.
The bill passed the US House of Representatives with a 262-159 vote earlier in the week before being sent for presidential signature. Beyond Russia, the legislative measure also extends punitive framework provisions against entities aiding Russian military supply chains and reinforces existing trade enforcement measures against Iran. European and international observers view the act as a significant shift in global trade compliance standards and international economic sanctions enforcement.
