Uttar Pradesh to Establish Mental Health Support Cells Across All Universities and Colleges
The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, announced on September 7, 2026, that it will introduce a uniform Student Mental Health and Well-Being Policy across all higher education institutions in the state. Under the new initiative, dedicated mental health support cells will be established in every college and university to help students cope with academic pressure, examination anxiety, and career-related stress.
Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay chaired a high-level review meeting in Lucknow to discuss the implementation strategy. The proposed policy aims to create a safe, supportive, and stress-free academic ecosystem by establishing a coordinated mental health network at the state, district, and institutional levels. The Director of Higher Education will serve as the nodal authority, while a steering committee headed by the Principal Secretary of Higher Education will oversee governance and monitoring.
By providing timely psychological counseling and access to mental health specialists, the state government aims to foster overall student development beyond traditional academic degrees. The policy reflects growing national attention toward mental wellness on educational campuses, offering structured support to young scholars navigating intense academic environments.
