Gadag's role in Karnataka's unification recalled at district Rajyotsava
Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said the demand for a unified Karnataka began in Gadag, and announced department review meetings on November 16–18; Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned for the district stadium.
Gadag marked the 71st Karnataka Rajyotsava at the District Stadium on Sunday, with speakers highlighting the district's part in the movement that led to a unified Karnataka.
District In-charge Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said it was a matter of pride that the demand for the unification of Karnataka originated in Gadag, and recalled leaders from the region who took part in both the freedom struggle and the movement for linguistic states. He said he would hold progress review meetings with departments on November 16, 17 and 18.
Presiding over the event, MLA H K Patil said the name 'Karnataka' drew inspiration from Kumaravyasa's Karnata Bharata Kathamanjari, a classic written in the region. He said Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned to develop the District Stadium and three projects have been taken up to ease drinking water problems.
The minister hoisted the flag and reviewed a march-past of 21 contingents, including police, home guards, fire services, forest guards, NCC, Scouts and Guides and school students. A tableaux procession by government departments was flagged off earlier in the day.
