Census 2027: 34 lakh enumerators to be trained under 'PRAMAN'; house-to-house counting from December 1 in four states
About 34 lakh enumerators, mostly government school teachers, will be trained for the second phase of Census 2027, which asks 40 questions per household and adds 13 new data fields. Caste will be recorded in an open column, and giving an Aadhaar number is optional.
The government is preparing to train around 34 lakh enumerators, most of them government school teachers, for the population enumeration phase of Census 2027. Door-to-door counting will begin on December 1 in Uttar Pradesh and three other poll-bound states, with the rest of the country to follow.
The training follows a framework called PRAMAN, short for Pehchan (identity), Rishta (rapport), Anurodh (request), Madad (help), Aankada Shuddhata (data accuracy) and Nishtha (integrity), aimed at helping enumerators win households' trust and record accurate answers.
The Census schedule has 40 questions, and officials expect each household to take at least 20 to 25 minutes. It includes 13 new data fields, among them details of parents, Aadhaar and voter ID numbers. Caste, under Question 10C, will be recorded in an open column without drop-down options.
Officials said giving an Aadhaar number is optional and is not linked to determining citizenship. Census 2027 is India's first since 2011 and also the first to offer self-enumeration online before enumerators visit.
